As we prayerfully consider our continued involvement in Haiti, a small team of five visited Port-Au-Prince last weekend. One aspect of this trip was to meet with organizations providing prosthetics to amputees in Haiti. This is one of the needs which have been heavy on our hearts since our initial involvement with the tragic earthquake that devastated Haiti back in January. Since our return, we have met with doctors and organizations in an effort to understand what the process entails. We are prayerfully seeking where we can assist and minister to amputees.
It was on this initial trip where the first team flew into the Dominican Republic in hopes of crossing the border and ministering to the people of Haiti. The Lord granted an opportunity for several team members to minister in a border hospital located in Jimani. The hospital was overwhelmed with victims transported across the border in need of medical attention. The team met a young man who had both feet amputated. His faith in the Lord left us with such an impression. He reminded us why a believer views the losses in this world as just temporary; trusting that one day all things will be restored.
One of the goals of this trip was to find this young man and reunite with him. With no means of communication and just a name and city, they attempted to find him, but the Lord had other plans. The team visited a tent community and a hospital where they had opportunities to share the Good News and pray with many who had suffered losses from the earthquake. In the process, we also met with an organization that is treating and fitting amputees with prosthetics. They provided us with the information needed to help amputees receive artificial limbs.
It is our hope to one day be reunited with this young man, but until then, there are so many like him that need to hear about the love of Christ and the plans He has for them, to bring them a future and a hope.
One of the team members plays with the kids whose orphanage was destroyed during the earthquake and are now living in temporary shelter. What a blessing to be able to bring some laughter and joy to them.
The few items that were salvaged from the orphanage are kept in a room. Lord willing, these children will have a place they can call home in the near future.
These items are covered to protect them from the elements, children still fear sleeping in homes due to fears of tremors and will sleep outdoors instead.
The team visits a tent community to bring some needed tarps. This is one of hundreds of tent communities throughout Haiti. Tents and tarps are essential during the rainy season and are used as means of shelters in place of plastics and other salvaged materials.
This man and many others lost their homes in the recent earthquake. He invited one of our team members to see his new home. Many families do not have the luxury of two tents and are very cramped for space.
Adjusting to their temporary living conditions, utilizing plastic basin for washing clothes and other necessities such as cooking are all done around the tents.
This young man lost his leg as a result of the earthquake. There are many organizations mobilizing to help others who have suffered the same. We were able to connect him and others to these organizations waiting to help.
Team member uses the camera to make children laugh as they see their faces on the LCD screen. This is one photo we kept.
As the team departs; the kids follow their new friends to the entrance. It is blessing to bring laughter to these families even if for a short time.
Team members visit a local hospital where they had opportunities to pray with patients.
We are amazed at the welcomed prayers. Hospitals that welcome and encourage teams who have a heart to minister to the sick are not uncommon.
Please pray for this child, he was badly burned when he fell into a pot of boiling beans. He lives with his family in a tent community, we also prayed with his aunt who was burned as well. These are one of the challenges of living in a space where the basic needs are done in a confined space.
